Why are Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) used in air compressors

Currently, many air compressors use VFDs to regulate frequency, stabilize outlet pressure, and achieve automatic switching of the air compressor's operating frequency. So, what are the benefits of adding a VFD to an air compressor?

1. Air compressor specifications are generally selected based on actual cooling demand. However, because air compressors may need to operate year-round, facing extreme weather conditions across both summer and winter, there may be some discrepancies between the actual operating conditions and the design specifications, resulting in excess compressor power.

2. Intermittent operation of air compressors is a common operating mode. If the ambient temperature is higher than the set temperature, the air compressor will start running, but when the ambient temperature is lower than the set temperature, the air compressor will stop running. This operating mode is suitable for situations where the ambient temperature is relatively stable and the load is not large. However, in reality, the ambient temperature can change at any time. Especially in extreme weather and complex working environments, various production activities can cause changes in cooling load, frequent temperature fluctuations, and frequent starting and stopping of the engine, leading to significant energy waste and wear and tear on equipment components.

3. The instantaneous current of the generator spreads throughout the entire power grid, increasing grid fluctuations and reducing the lifespan of the air compressor. Variable frequency technology can effectively mitigate these negative effects.

4. Under certain operating conditions, the cooling capacity of the air compressor is directly proportional to the mass flow rate. The basic idea of variable frequency control is to change the rotational speed of the air compressor motor to regulate the mass flow rate, thereby changing the cooling capacity of the entire unit.

Therefore, both subjectively and objectively, using a VFD to regulate the frequency of the air compressor is highly worthwhile. It not only saves resources but also improves the working efficiency of the air compressor system, bringing more benefits to enterprises.
