Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are primarily used in variable-frequency air compressors. The higher price of these units compared to standard fixed-speed compressors is largely due to the inclusion of the VFD and differences in the main compressor unit—with the VFD accounting for a significant portion of the cost. Consequently, whether purchasing a new variable-frequency compressor or retrofitting an existing unit for energy efficiency, selecting the right VFD is crucial; users must choose a drive that matches the actual motor power. Today, we will explore the key factors to consider when selecting VFDs for different types of air compressors.
1. Load Type and VFD Selection. Air compressor VFDs cannot be used indiscriminately; it is essential to understand the load characteristics, environmental requirements, and VFD specifications, as different motor loads impose different requirements on the drive.
(1) Fans and Water Pumps: These are the most common types of loads and have the simplest requirements for air compressor VFDs; the VFD capacity simply needs to match the motor capacity.
(2) Hoisting/Lifting Loads: These loads are characterized by high starting torque and shock loads, requiring the VFD to have a certain capacity margin. Additionally, lowering heavy loads generates regenerative energy, necessitating the use of a braking unit or a common DC bus configuration.
(3) Variable/Fluctuating Loads: Some loads alternate between light and heavy conditions (e.g., rolling mills, crushers, and mixers). In these cases, the VFD capacity should be selected based on the heavy-load requirement.
2. Long-term Low-speed Operation: Prolonged low-speed operation leads to increased motor heat generation and reduced cooling fan efficiency. To mitigate this, one must either increase the gear reduction ratio or switch to a 6-pole motor, thereby allowing the motor to operate at a higher frequency. 3. The installation site for the variable frequency drive (VFD) must meet standard environmental requirements; otherwise, malfunctions or a shortened service life may result. The distance between the air compressor VFD and the drive motor should generally not exceed 50 meters; if a greater distance is required, the carrier frequency must be lowered or an optional output reactor installed to ensure proper operation.
